As a celebrant, I’ve had the privilege of standing alongside couples during some truly beautiful weddings  and honestly, some of the most memorable celebrations have also been the most budget-friendly. A meaningful wedding isn’t about how much money you spend. It’s about creating a day that feels like you. The relaxed backyard weddings, beach ceremonies, community hall receptions, shared meals, and DIY touches often have the warmest atmosphere and the best stories.
If you’re currently planning a wedding and wondering how to keep wedding costs low, here are some practical and creative ideas to help you plan a beautiful day without blowing the budget.

Start With What Matters Most to You as a Couple

Before you book anything, sit down together and make a list of your priorities.
When couples try to do everything, that’s usually when wedding costs begin  spiral. But when you focus on the things that genuinely matter to you, it becomes much easier to save money on the rest.
For some couples, the dream is an incredible wedding venue.
For others, it’s having all their favourite people there.
Some care deeply about photography. Others just want a laid-back backyard wedding with good food and good company.
There’s no right or wrong: just what feels right for you as a couple. 

Next Make a List of the Resources You Already

One of the best ways to plan a budget wedding is to look at the skills, talents, and resources already around you.
You might be surprised how many people genuinely want to help.
Think about your friends and family:

• Does someone make amazing cakes?
• Is your aunty brilliant at decorating?
• Does your nanna have a beautiful flower garden?
• Is there a family bach, farm, or backyard you could use as a wedding venue?
• Do you know someone with a sound system and loves to DJ?
• Do you have a talented photographer friend who could gift a photo session?

Sometimes the most meaningful wedding gifts aren’t things wrapped in paper, they’re people contributing their talents to help create your day.
Not only can this save thousands of dollars, but it also creates memories and connection.

Have a Wedding Working Bee

Turn wedding prep into fun, shared experiences instead of stressful jobs.
Invite your bridal party, friends, or family around for a “wedding working bee” with snacks, music, and drinks.
You could:

• Arrange flowers together
• Make table centrepieces
• Create DIY signage
• Prep wedding favours
• Decorate the venue
• Put together playlists
• Set up outdoor lighting
• Bake slices or desserts

It becomes part of the celebration itself.

Never underestimate the power of op shops, Facebook Marketplace, and Trademe
You can find:

• Wedding dresses
• Bridesmaid dresses
• Vases
• Candle holders
• Table decorations
• Fairy lights
• Photo frames
• Outdoor games
• Actually you can find everything 

Many couples sell wedding items after only one use, often at a fraction of the original price.
And honestly? Nobody at your wedding knows whether your candle holders came from a fancy hire company or an op shop. Op shopping is also the modern way of going treasure hunting. 

Think Outside the Box when it comes to Food:

Wedding catering can be one of the biggest expenses, but it doesn’t have to look traditional.
Some of the most relaxed and joyful weddings I’ve seen have completely reimagined the food experience.
Ideas for affordable wedding catering in New Zealand:

• Pot luck wedding; everyone brings a plate
• Food trucks
• Fish and chip dinners at the beach
• BBQ buffet
• Shared grazing tables
• Afternoon tea weddings
• Picnic-style receptions
• Brunch weddings
• Dessert-only receptions
• BYO venues
• Family cooked hangi or cultural meals

For my own wedding, we hired a spit and organised the food all ourselves and then paid a donation to the Lions club to cook and serve us on the day. It was much cheaper than a catering company and the money went to charity. 

Choose Off-Peak Wedding Dates

Saturday summer weddings are usually the most expensive.
You can often save money by choosing:

• A Friday wedding
• A Sunday wedding
• A winter wedding
• An autumn wedding
• An off-season venue booking

Many New Zealand wedding venues offer cheaper rates outside peak season. I myself have off season rates as a celebrant. The people who truly love you will willingly take time off work to be there on your day. 


Digital Invitations Save More Than You Think

Printed invitations can add up quickly.
Digital wedding invitations are now incredibly common and can save money on printing and postage. 
You can still create something beautiful online while keeping costs down. You can even set up a whole wedding website for your day. 

Borrow Before You Buy

Before purchasing anything, ask around.
You’d be amazed what people already have sitting in garages or cupboards:
Wedding communities are often wonderfully generous.

Keep Perspective

At the end of the day, your wedding is about your relationship. 
The weddings people talk about years later are rarely the ones with the most expensive chair covers.
They remember:

• The laughter
• The atmosphere
• The people
• The dancing
• The fun
• The love in the room

Some of the best weddings I’ve ever been a part of have been beautifully simple, deeply personal, and completely relaxed.
So if you’re planning a wedding on a budget, give yourself permission to do things differently.
Think outside the box.
Use your community.
Focus on what matters most.
And create a wedding that genuinely feels like you. 
And make sure your having fun throughout the whole process. If it becomes overwhelming it's time to reassess your priorities and have a rethink.
